Aobo Li

Hello, I'm Aobo (pronounced "obo") and I'm excited to be instructing DSC40A during the winter term! I am a new faculty at HDSI & the Department of Physics. I earned my B.S. from UW Seattle and my PhD from Boston University, both in the field of physics. My research uses machine learning to squeeze out the maximum amount of information from ultra-sensitive radiation detectors, all in the quest to uncover elusive neutrinos/dark matters.

The connections between physics and data science always fascinate me: In physics, we translate nature's message into data through meticulously designed experiments, and then "learning from data" to advance our physics knowledge. DSC40A will teach you how to "learn from data" to tackle real-world challenges. Beyond academia, my interests span from following e-sports to exploring national parks and photography.

Hi, I am a second-year master’s student from the ECE department. I graduate from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen with a bachelor degree in Data Science. My research interests lie at the intersection of machine learning and information theory. I am excited to participate in teaching an introductory machine learning course. Please feel free to discuss any topics you find interesting in this field.

Benjamin Xue

bxue@ucsd.edu

Hello everyone! My name is Ben, and I am a 4th year Data Science major from Houston, Texas. DSC 40A was definitely my favorite data science course here, and you will learn a lot about the fundamentals of machine learning and probability. In my free time, I like to play basketball, watch football, and go on hikes around San Diego.

Candus Shi
she/her

c6shi@ucsd.edu

Howdy y’all, I’m Candus, a third-year majoring in data science, minoring in math, and I’m from Santa Cruz 🤙! I enjoy learning/teaching the concepts in DSC 40A—it helped me make my decision to minor in math—so I am stoked to be tutoring again. In my free time I enjoy knitting, playing jazz piano, and golfing. Looking forward to meeting y’all 😎!

Charlie Sun

p3sun@ucsd.edu

Hello! My name is Charlie, I’m a second-year majoring in Data Science. I like rap, poker, and f1. This is my second time tutoring DSC40A - to be honest it wasn’t my favorite class as a student, but the more pieces I put together, the more I began to appreciate its charm and importance. The concepts in this class are actually super helpful (especially for when I play poker), so I really hope you could feel the same way as I did, and we’ll try our best to help you on this journey!

Mert Ozer
he/him

mozer@ucsd.edu

Hello, I am a sophomore majoring in Data Science from Türkiye. DSC40A excites me because it is the first data science course where we learn the principles underlying machine learning and get to know its different types. You can chat with me about entrepreneurship and finance or play tennis.

Sunan Xu
he/him

sux002@ucsd.edu

Hi, my name is Sunan. I am a third-year student majoring in bioinformatics and data science. I was born in China and before moving to San Diego, I spent four years in Nashville for my high school education. I have tutored DSC 30 and 80 before, but this is my first time tutoring DSC 40. I am really excited since DSC 40 is my favorite among the DSC courses, as it explains some interesting mathematical ideas behind coding.

Vivian Lin
she/her

Hi everyone! I am Vivian, and I am a 4th year Data Science major with a Business minor. My hometown is Saratoga, CA. In my free time, I love to play tennis, go to the beach, read, and explore San Diego with friends! A fun fact about me is I have performed Irish dancing for a Golden State Warriors’ halftime show before. This is my fifth time tutoring DSC 40A, so I am super excited to meet you all and answer any questions you guys may have! Feel free to stop my OH whenever, even if it’s just to say hi!
